Now You See Me

Born upon a tide of lights, the river of the road
Winding through this cold November night down to what I’ve come to call my home
And I’m counting down the numbers on the blue metallic signs
On a journey of migration I’ve made so many times

I didn’t know that you’d be there, you took me by surprise
And I was fifty miles away before I realised
With the sudden flare of firework sparks exploding in the dark
And the sudden thought of losing you exploding in my heart

And I can hardly see the road for tears falling down like silver shards
Thinking what a mystery it is that I choose to live like this
Rushing by you on the road, now you see me, now you don’t.

I have an image of you on a November night like this
Did you feel my heartbeat, did you feel the tangle of my limbs?
Were you counting down the days that you still had me to yourself?
Did you fear the coming pain, or did you long to see my face?

Rain falls on my windscreen like a mirror for my tears
The rhythm of the wipers is like a pulse-beat in my ears
Headlights mark the ribbon that connects our distant lives
Falling sparks imprint their image on the deep November skies

And I can hardly see the road for tears falling down like silver shards
Thinking what a mystery it is that I choose to live like this
Rushing by you on the road, now you see me, now you don’t.
