Bird

I took the long way home tonight
And stopped to watch a bird in flight
Gliding on the current of the wind
And like a refugee might stand
On the edge of no man’s land
I watched it soar and wondered how it feels

When all you ever do is fly
All you ever do is fly

We talk about a bird’s eye view
As if a bird could see the truth
Stretching out across the miles and out to sea
But tethered to the earth down here
Nothing ever seems so clear
I wonder how it feels to rise above

With nothing else to do but fly
Nothing else to do but fly

Up here the air is clear and rare
I watch the world beneath me fall away
And as I rise, I tilt and glide
The curve of the horizon shows the way

I took the long way home tonight
And stopped to watch a bird in flight
Gliding on the current of the wind
And now you're asking where we stand
In the darkened hall, the phone in hand
I'm telling you again that I don't know
I wish I was a bird tonight
I'd trade the earth for sky
My wings would beat, I'd blink my beady eye

With nothing else to do but fly
Nothing else to do but fly
