Wedding Day

There were seashell garlands in the driveway, mermaids in the trees

Funnel web waiters with their best bow-ties serving a sun-cream tea

No-one at the party even knew you’d named the day

But when you said “I do I do” you gave the game away

On your wedding day

Word spread fast about the seaweed dress you chose to wear

The bridesmaids all wore wetsuits, they had seaspray in their hair

The groom came as a swagman, the best man caught the bouquet

He called himself Matilda and he waltzed the night away

On your wedding day

Later in the evening when the speeches had been spoken

And the toasts had all been toasted and the sun was going down

You stood hand in hand and you just watched the breakers breaking

And talked about all the years to come

And the ups and downs and the give and take

Seemed just like a piece of cake

On your wedding day

The guests were eating canapés with Castlemaine and quiche

And barracuda burgers from the barbie on the beach

And then they all went surfing in the moonlight’s silver wake

And everybody gathered round to watch you sail away

On your wedding day
